New Challenge Blog - Friday Sketch Challenge

There's a new Challenge Blog in town - Friday Sketch Challenge and I'm excited to announce that I'm on the Design Team!! We get started on Friday the 16th of September and I can't wait to show you what we come up with! The girls have created some amazing sketches (I hope when it's my turn that mine will compare, I've never done anything other than sketch out a basic design on some scrap paper before!)
I've been working on a few DT cards and it is definitely getting my mojo flowing again so I can't wait to start sharing them with you!

Blog Award

Even though I haven't blogged consistently in forever, 2 of my beautiful blogging friends awarded me this little lovely blog award!
Kathy awarded it to me as an encouragement to keep blogging and Louise (can't wait to catch up with you at Convention!!!!!!) awarded it to me for being inspirational.

As a condition of being nominated I have to pass the love onto 5 bloggers. I'm going to cheat and just nominate 5 rather than 5 per award given to me :)
I have chosen 5 of my favourite bloggers, you know the ones that when you open your google reader and see there is a new post you have to read it before you read any of the others? So here they are in no particular order:

• Naomi - Naomi is a real life friend as well as a blogging friend and she isn't a stamping blogger (despite the blog name inkcrush) but if you love to read you'll love her blog, Nomes has a passion for reading (and goes through books like noone else) and she has never given me or recommended to me a book that I haven't liked yet.
• Karen - As well as being a sweet person that I "met" on SCS Karen is one of the most dedicated stampers I know, some days I think she must enter every stamping challenge on the web! I hope one day I can catch up with Karen in real life!
• Allison - Allison is another lovely person I "met" online, I can't remember how I stumbled across her blog but I'm so glad I did! I now consider her a friend and I was so excited to get a Christmas card from her last year, all the way from CANADA! Apart from having great taste in Girl's names (she has a Charlotte too!) she is a dedicated blogger with a new post (or 3) most days. If you like sketch challenges make sure you check out her blog, she has a linky program thingie set up that you can enter any sketch challenges that you find so there is a great consolidated list of sketches any time you feel that your mojo is waning.
• Leonie - Leonie is one of my twitter/facebook buddies as well as a brilliant stamper. She even organised accomodation for my downline & I at convention even though we weren't part of her team and there's nothing in it for her (except of course Leanne's & my company!), for that I am very grateful and I can't wait to spend some more time with her in person!
• Robyn - Robyn is another challenge enterer, and she makes some beautiful cards & I have a couple of favourited at the moment to copy later on down the track! I'm lucky enough to have "met" Robyn through my upline Lisa and hopefully we can catch up in person when I'm in her neck of the woods for SU! convention.

All the gory details...

Ok, so not ALL the gory details, but you know, more info than Justin gave you :)
I started typing this post up last week, but we've had a bit of drama this week so I'll start again, sorry if this gets a bit long but I want this written up so I remember... There are photos at the end as a reward for those who make it to the end lol
The day Jack was born (7/9/09) I woke up with a contraction about 4am but being half asleep I didn't realise what was going on straight away (just thought it was just more aches and pains so I got up and went to the toilet for a stretch) and it was only when I woke up about 7 and had another "ache" then remembered waking up and going back to sleep a few times in between 4 and 7.
I wasn't due for another 10 days and decided that I would go on time or overdue so I wasn't ready (as opposed to when I was pregnant with Charlotte and my bag etc was mostly packed with about 8 weeks to go), I rang my mum who had to come over from Orange, sent Justin to work (no point in wasting a day of leave if nothing happened until that night), took Charlotte to preschool and went out and did a few jobs that I had to do before I went into hospital while I waited for her to get here. (I can tell you I was so nervous walking around Target... I spent the whole time mentally willing my waters to stay in tact lol).
When Mum got here we started packing my bag and then she took my to my dr's appointment (I had a normal check up booked in so I decided to go anyway), at that stage my contractions were still so irregular that Dr Morris basically just said you could have the baby today or you could have it next week, just go to the hospital if the pain gets bad or they get down to a few minutes apart.
By about 4.30 the contractions were starting to get really painful but still not very close together (about 5 mins or so apart), so we called Justin's mum to come and pick up Charlotte (it was getting hard to hide the contractions from her and I didn't want to scare her) and told Justin to be ready to come straight home from work at 5.30. Mum had already cooked dinner since we didn't know how long it would take and we wanted some energy to get us through the night, and when Justin got home we scoffed it down and headed up to the hospital at 6.15.
I was really looking forward to having a bath for the pain (Parkes Maternity have this awesome big bath that you can stretch out almost completely in and it was the only thing that helped with the pain when I was having Charlotte) and that was the only reason I wanted to go up when I did, anyway, I got my bath after much demanding on my part to the poor midwife who had to just check that I wasn't too far along to have one, (since it's not set up for waterbirths they won't let you use it if you're too close to the main event) and I think by the time she went to run the bath she said something along the lines of "I'm going to go do it now miss bossy boots" lol. Anyway I hung out in the bath for the next hour and a half or so until I felt my waters break, (I even heard them pop, how cool is that? sorry TMI???) followed by the insane need to push. There was heaps of scrambling by the midwives and trying to get me out of the bath, I was refusing to budge but like I said before it wasn't the right type of bath for waterbirths. They basically had to drag me out of the bath. They realised that I wasn't planning on moving very far so they dragged in a mat & birthing ball and I had Jack on the bathroom floor. Because of how I sort of landed on the mat (I really wasn't moving any further than I had to lol) I was actually blocking the door way so Mum and 1 midwife were standing in the doorway and Justin and the other midwife were in the room with me, so they handed Justin a pair of gloves and told him to put them on in case Pat needed an extra pair of hands. He didn't get to use them but he said it was pretty cool that it was even a possibility.
Anyway, you already know the rest of that part of the story, Jack was born at 8.10pm and was a huge 9lb 7.5oz (4290g), but here comes the rest of the drama...
While we were in Hospital Jack wasn't feeding heaps but they kept an eye on his blood sugar levels and they were perfect, so they decided he must just be an efficient feeder, getting what he needed in very little time. When we came home on Thursday he'd lost about 400g off his birth weight but because they knew he was healthy and he was a big boy they weren't concerned, by Monday when the family health nurses came to do the follow up check up with us at home he'd lost a total of 770g. They decided that it couldn't be right and asked us to go back up to maternity to get him weighed on the same scales as his last weight check in case one of the sets of scales was wrong. We turned up at the hospital expecting that the scales would say close to what he weighed when we'd left the week before and we'd be there for half an hour and could go home again. They weighed him and he was down to 3520g (roughly 7lb 12oz) the exact same weight as earlier in the day.
It was a huge shock (and I'll admit to bursting into tears quite a few times) and over the next hour or so we were presented with our options, all of which involved us being admitted back into hospital until we got him to put on weight, at first I was under the impression that it would only be a day or 2, but later they told me that they were considering keeping us in until he gained back all the weight he had lost (which caused more tears lol).
What basically happened is, that Jack is such a placid (he had to be for the sake of getting along with his sister lol) and sleepy baby that he would fall asleep really early while feeding before he got to the "full cream" equivalent of the milk so he wasn't getting enough energy out of it, then because of his lack of energy he would feed for even less time before falling asleep the next time and get even less energy out of the milk and the vicious cycle would continue. The reason he went so long before we realised what was happening was because he is so laid back that he wouldn't cry even though he was hungry. Even now after we have built up his appetite again he will cry because he's hungry then as soon as you pick him up he quiets and is happy because you've acknowledged he's upset.
The options we were given were to switch to formula, or for me to keep feeding him and then topping him up with bottles and then having me pump to build my milk supply up. We decided to go to straight formula for 2 reasons, 1) I can see exactly how much he has eaten so I don't have to worry for no reason and 2) the process of building my milk supply back up would be so tedious and time consuming that it would leave no time for Charlotte, and we had to make her a high priority in the decision.
Anyway, 4 (very long) nights in hospital, bucketfuls of tears and 400g later we are finally back home again and Jack is more awake, actually staying awake between feeds occasionally and I can't quite describe it but just more like a normal baby.
We'll have another weigh in on Monday morning to check he is still improving and gaining weight, so hopefully we won't end up back in hospital.

Anyway here's the real reason you read this far:

Baby's birthday - Blog Candy without the Candy...

Something I did when I was pregnant with Charlotte was run a little pool on when she would be born and what sex she was going to be(since we didn't find out last time). With the baby due this month I thought it might be fun to do it again. No prizes, just the satisfaction of getting it right (and don't we all love to be right?).

***In interest of full disclosure my official due date is the 17th, and when I was pregnant with Charlotte I was 2 days over by 1 due date and 2 days under by another. And you don't have to guess a sex, since we already know this one is a boy lol***

Blog Changes

Just making some changes to my blog. At this stage I've made all the technical changes that I think I want to make and there are only cosmetic changes left to be done (new banner & colourscheme etc), It seems to be working well on my end but let me know if you find any bugs that need fixing and I'll do my best.
ETA: I've done the banner, gotta fiddle with colours now

Spring Mini Catalogue has launched!

Parkes (not-so) Mini Bridal Expo

As most of you know I had the Bridal Expo on this weekend and so many of you wished me luck that I thought I'd share a few photo's of my display and let you know how it went.

The night was a huge success they had over 200 brides through the door (plus friends, family and 'sight-seers') which for our town of only about 12k or so people is a big event, it originally started out as the Services club wanting to show off their newly renovated function room and putting a call out in the paper for expression of interest from wedding related businesses. By the time the mini-expo rolled around there were 36 exhibitors! Considering how quickly it blew up into something huge I think the girls who organised it did a fantastic job (and I have a thank you card on my to-do list for this week to tell them so)
Anyway, here are some pics from my display:
I kept the display really simple, had my portfolio open for people to browse and a few brochures lucky door and business cards. If anyone is looking for a banner like that I actually got mine through Vistaprint designed to match my business cards, you do need to be careful that you don't tick (or untick if necessary) the "give me more offers" button because they will send you emails every day without fail if you leave it ticked (and the unsubscribe button is broken most of the time so it takes a month of daily unsubscribing to find the random day they let you unsubscribe!). But apart from their email marketing strategies they are a great company to deal with, the prices are pretty good, where they do "get you" is postage but even the 21 day slow option only takes about a week so I've never opted for any other option.

My lucky door prize bowl is just a cool candle holder I picked up for a few dollars at The Reject Shop and the business cards with the lollypops were just normal cards punched with a hole and the lolly pop threaded through.

I laid out my portfolio with each of the sets I've been showing you (still have a handful to photograph and share) on a 12x12 black page, I clear embossed up the sides with the "It's Beautiful" wheel to give a bit of interest without detracting from the designs. (Thanks to Marcia for suggesting I use this format!)

At the other end of the table I had my brochures and a candle just to make some interest, the mirror is a glass tile I stole from my sister-in-law left over from their wedding.

As well as doing my display I was talking to one of the organisers and she suggested that I do place cards and bonbonniere for the display Bridal table, but they wanted them simple in White & Gold so these are what I came up with. I was also able to get Gold embossing onto a candle by using the normal Stamping on Candles technique but with an embossed image, it makes quite a cool illusion, the gold flower looks raised but because of how you get the image onto the candle it is completely smooth with the wax.
The Bonbonniere were an easter egg pouch pattern that I stole from my upline Lisa. They were super quick and simple to make, You can see here how they fit together:
The chocolate is lightly glued in with a small strip of snail and the pouch is held shut with velcro dots.

Card Photography

I'm not pretending to be a professional photographer or anything but since I still don't have any new cards that I can share yet I thought I'd share quickly on how I take photos of my cards.
There are a few places that people seem to go wrong, and if you look back at my older cards you'll notice I made the same mistakes and someone told me how to fix them, so I thought I'd pass it on.Backgrounds
Noone wants to look at pictures of your messy desk (unless there's new catalogue spoilers etc to be seen in the background lol) so I always try to find somewhere clean but plain to take a photo, some people have a nice bookcase etc to give a clean background without distracting from the card. Clear, dust free surfaces are hard to find in a house with a toddler who trashes things and a husband that "doesn't know" (ha! likely story...) where anything lives, so I go for the lightbox approach. Lightboxes are really expensive but you can get the same look without spending a cent.
In the photo above you can see my "light box" I use 2 backing sheets from DSP Packs and prop them up like you can see in the pic, 1 for the base and 1 for the background. If I'm doing a layout I put the 2 sheets side by side for the background and use a clean piece of grid paper for the base. I have also seen people use a coordinating sheet of DSP as the background which looks fantastic as well.
Some people use daylight or OTT lamps to get the colours right, but I find with a few photoshop tricks you don't necessarily need one - more on that later.
Camera Settings
I set the camera on Macro, most entry level point and shoot digital camera's have a macro setting these days (in case you aren't sure which button it is, here is a photo, they look similar on all camera brands). If you use the macro settings you are telling the camera that you are trying to take a close photo with lots of detail so the camera focuses better and seems to pick up a lot more of the detail. It also seems to not make the flash as harsh (at least on my camera), not really sure on the technicalities but i can take a photo with the flash and totally wash it out, then switch to macro and from the same distance have the colours and detail come out perfectly.
Also, don't be afraid to back off and get more background in the frame than what you want, you can easily crop it out later.
Photoshop
Using the flash will affect the colours slightly even with the macro setting, I have a hand-me-down copy of photoshop CS2 that I use but most photo editing software would have similar options. Anyway my trick (about the only thing I know how to do apart from crop a photo) is to go into the Image menue... Adjustments... Auto Levels, then Auto Contrast and Auto Colour. Sometimes you might need to undo and leave out 1 of the steps but I find that these 3 normally make a huge improvement to the colour of my photo's.
If you don't have access to photoshop or similar you may find that you need to position your "lightbox" in sunlight to get enough natural light to go without the flash.

Brag alert!

Ok, so before you accuse me of losing all my talent & or mojo I want to tell you that this is a card Charlotte made at playgroup.
Anyway, I've been making heaps lately, but nothing I can show you right now (don't you hate when people say that???) and my scheduled posts have run out, so to keep up with my new years resolution of blogging every few days I thought I'd share this one with you.
I felt weird helping her make me a mothers day card so we made one for my mum instead. Someone had got some cardstock and cut love hearts out of the front for the kids to colour and stick stuff on. Charlotte had fun with the glue, it ended up all over her.
And we decorated the inside and the back too:
She "wrote" in the card (ie me holding her hand holding the crayon) and I was telling her what we were writing as we were writing it and when I said "love" (for the heart) she leaned over and kissed the page so I had to add the 2 little kisses at the end, and I'll make sure to tell my mum that they are real kisses lol.
I'm actually pretty impressed at how simple these were and how much she loved making it so we made one for Justin's mum & nana too, which I'll share if I don't get more stamping done soon lol.

A little plug for my good friend Nat

My friend Natalie has an online business called "Enjoyem" selling all sorts of cute little bits and pieces for Babies and Small Children, among my favourite things that she sells are the Nappy Cakes (they can be made up with singlets and other bits and pieces if the mother to be isn't using cloth) and the huge big Muslin Wraps which are fantastic for keeping little wriggle worms tucked up nice and warm during winter, (seriously anything less than about 1.2m wide is useless!).
Anyway, next time you're after a baby gift make sure you go and check out what Nat has to offer, you couldn't be dealing with a nicer person!

Just have to share!

Just had to share some exciting news! So I've been slack and haven't officially announced it online here but I think most of you have heard by now anyway that I'm having another baby (due middle to end of september). Meet our "Bubba":We went to have the ultrasound today and everything is perfect, I have placenta prevaria (or something like that) again but it's apparently very common as a full bladder can deceptively make it look like you have it and all it means in most cases is that I'll get another ultrasound at 30 weeks to make sure it's all good, and the radiographer who did the ultrasound (best one in Australia in my opinion) - says not to worry about it, that the doctors like to get a 30 week scan done but medicare doesn't allow for it unless there's good cause so the doctor will use this as his reason for needing it but realistically he just wants a better guage on the size of the baby etc than what you can get at this stage. Like I said I had it with charlotte and there wasn't a problem at all.

So anyway that's not the most exciting news of all, the most exciting news is this: Not sure if you can see it but let's put it nicely: That photo means the "it" is a "Him".

I feel a bit bad because I was telling everyone I'd love a 2nd little girl (and still would but not sure if we'll have 3 get the 2nd one here first lol) but when I saw that pop up on the screen there was not an ounce of disappointment just alot of nervousness, I've been pretty laidback about this pregnancy thinking I can do this again, no problem but now I'm a bit nervous, boys are uncharted territory, I feel like I've done girls, I know girls, but what do you do with a boy? lol
